Since April 2026, Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding assistant, contained hidden logic that identified users with Chinese-linked network connections and marked their sessions with steganographic signals invisible to users: date formats were swapped and visually identical Unicode apostrophe characters substituted in system prompts to transmit flags back to Anthropic's servers. The code checked timezones and proxy URLs against a list of 147 Chinese entities, including competing AI labs and account resellers. A Reddit user discovered and published the reverse-engineered code on June 30. Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar acknowledged it as an experiment launched in March to prevent account abuse from unauthorized resellers and protect against model distillation. Anthropic removed the code in the July 1 release; Alibaba then banned Claude Code from its platforms. The discovery was damaging because Anthropic has positioned itself as a safety-first developer, and covert monitoring of users on the basis of national origin is a credibility problem with the Chinese developers and enterprise customers who had been adopting Claude Code at scale.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers including CEO Dario Amodei, built its public identity around AI safety and responsible development. Claude Code is its AI-assisted coding tool, competing with GitHub Copilot and Cursor. Model distillation refers to competitors using a model's outputs to train their own systems, a major concern among frontier labs.

The team found it in the spectral forrelation problem: they proved this problem has a valid quantum proof but no valid classical proof, even if the verifier has a quantum computer. Quantum mechanics offers an advantage not just in computation speed but in the nature of what can be proven.
